Optimization of Keywords for Free Traffic

When it comes to keyword optimization there are a number of opportunities out there especially in niche areas. We’ll show you how to optimize for keywords successfully.

The Scenario

Do you find yourself in this position?

Antonia owns a site selling specific niche products – novelty lighting and lava lamps. She’s just started her own blog where she reviews such products. The idea is to establish her reputation and her brand as the premier expert in the field of home lighting.

If so, you’re probably falling down when it comes to Search Engine Optimization and Keyword Marketing. Here’s how to succeed. We regularly get as much as 50% of our posts on the front page of Google for the keywords we pick. This is how we do it . . .

Keyword Optimization – The Strategy

Optimization of Blogposts to Pick off Keywords

When you learn how to optimize your blog posts for SEO you can start to see lots of free traffic flooding to your blog every single day. We use blogs to draw traffic for almost all our sites. Why? Well, blogs allow you to get good positions in natural search – this means you’re not blowing money on Pay Per Clicks ads. If you’re planning on a building a sustainable long-term Internet business, having a good ranking on Google is vital.

Once again it’s a very easy tactic to pursue.

Here’s how:

How can Antonia Implement this strategy of Keyword Optimization?

3 EASY STEPS

Antonia deals in novelty lighting and lava lamps. Obviously this would be excellent content for Antonia to blog about and link back to his ecommerce site.

1) Identify Keywords

Here’s the beauty of Wordtracker for Keyword Optimization:

Wordtracker enables you to find out how many times people search for a specific keyword a day on search engines. It then gives a complete list of all the variations on the keyword you’ve entered and how many times they have been searched for. Check out below.

I searched for “lava lamps” , as this is a top seller for Antonia, to find that . . .

TOP 3 KEYWORD VARIATIONS

1. Lava Lamps - searched for 650 times a day

2. Lava Lamps Wholesale - searched for 47 times a day

3. Retro Lava Lamps - searched for 24 times a day

This means that optimized articles on these topics would be ideal content for Antonia to blog about . . . BUT before she does this:

2) Are the keywords conquerable? In other words, how competitive are the keywords?

Let’s test this out with the most appropriate and 3rd most popular keyword variation searched for “retro lava lamps”. We type it into Google search and then analyze the results:

Antonia would open up the top ten results and take note of two things . . .

Google Page Rank (PR)

How much the keyword is optimized for

And she’d be very pleased at the findings for page 1 of Google:

Not a single page has a PR of above 4

3 pages have a PR of 0

Position 3 Has a PR of 1 and isn’t even optimized

Only 1 page out of the 10 is optimized for ‘retro lava lamp’

So what does this mean?

The keyword “retro lava lamps” is definitely conquerable – the next step is to write the heavily optimized keyword article.

3) Writing a blog post for Keyword Optimization

Here’s how to write a post optimized for the keyword “retro lava lamps”. Here’s the ‘secret sauce’ we used to get 10 out of 10 blogposts on the first page of Google.

Retro Lava Lamps in title

Retro Lava Lamps in meta description (will increase clicks from Google)

Retro Lava Lamps in H1 and H2

Retro Lava Lamps in H3-H6 (but not all H1-H6)

Retro Lava Lamps in first and last paragraph

Optimized URL including Retro Lava Lamps

HIGH QUALITY CONTENT! (Forget this at your peril!)

I am a big fan of Duct Tape Marketing, one of the leading Internet Marketing blogs for small businesses. However, I am very disappointed to see that they are encouraging their readers to abuse Truemors, a new site that just launched just for the sake of some free traffic. Yes, getting free traffic is nice but I would advocate that ethical marketing is more important. It is sad that most people just ignore ethics and will do just about anything to get free traffic and links. The temptation to spam social media sites (especially social news and bookmarking sites) is growing and to see some of the thought leaders endorse and encourage this is unacceptable. Why do I say that Duct Tape Marketing promotes spamming of Truemors? Duct Tape said this: Here’s an easy way to use Truemors for a little PR. Post a truemor that has a newsy feel or announcement theme about some aspect of your business or products. Think PR not sales. Here is what Truemors is all about: The content that we want is true rumors that is relevant, helps you make sense of the world, and also possibly entertains you. Now, I think it is very clear that the content that Truemors wants is not to have every small business owner create a Truemor saying “Did you see that….?” I just went to visit Truemors and all I could see on the site is spam. While I don’t blame Duct Tape for this, I think they should encourage their readers to be more responsible and not to abuse sites. NOTE: Duct Tape did say in their post “Don’t spam” but when they write an entire post educating people how to abuse a system is that really credible or just a worthless disclaimer?
How do you drive free traffic to your website? How would Internet Marketing Experts invest $100 to get free traffic? Today I came across a fantastic blog post where 7 Internet Marketing experts share how to market a website on just $100. Here are the two key insights on how to get free traffic that I took away from reading this article. Insight Number 1 on How to Get Free Traffic: “good content & good links” ~Andy Hagans (worlds best link baiter) If you are experienced, then this will not be very new to you but here is what is so shocking to me. The majority of new internet marketers tend to join dozens of sites or communities that promise to unleash tons of free traffic to their blog or their site. There are two huge problems with these types of sites that promise to help you get free traffic. Problem 1: Trading time for clicks Trading time for clicks is not an effective strategy on how to get free traffic. Why? Because it does not scale! There is no leverage. Granted, you might be able to get some visitors to your site by using a service such as BlogExplosion but I would say that you are not investing your time wisely. If you are doing it for fun just to discover new blogs, then I would say use a different service such as MyBlogLog because you will not discover the leading blogs by using a simple traffic exchange. Problem 2: Targeted vs. untargeted traffic Many newbies will signup and join sites such as: InstantBuzz TrumpTraffic TrafficSwarm Hits2u.com etc, etc… However, I am not even linking to these sites because I do not endorse them and I would not recommend them to you. The problem with these sites is that while they might get you some or even a lot of free traffic, it will most likely be NOT targeted and so while you can get free traffic here it will convert poorly. Insight Number 2 on How to Get Free Traffic: Spend $20 to $200 on books about the topic I am interested in, and I would get a few background books on marketing and the web including Purple Cow, The Cluetrain Manifesto, and Don’t Make Me Think. ~Aron Wall Learn from the best SEO experts in town. Read every leading SEO blog and invest money into buying SEO guides and books. You need to know how to optimize your content because only optimized content will do great in the search engines. Insight Number 3 on How to Get Free Traffic: Start blogging, pay for content writing, and leverage social media Another common theme that surfaced was the importance of writing blog posts and surprisingly the importance of hiring people to write content for you. This one came as a surprise to me but I think this is something that the leading Internet Marketing experts have been doing for a long time. Writing good original content takes time and there are lots...

Today I came across a fantastic blog post where 7 Internet Marketing experts share how to market a website on just $100.

Here are the two key insights on how to get free traffic that I took away from reading this article.

Insight Number 1 on How to Get Free Traffic:

“good content & good links”

~Andy Hagans (worlds best link baiter)

If you are experienced, then this will not be very new to you but here is what is so shocking to me. The majority of new internet marketers tend to join dozens of sites or communities that promise to unleash tons of free traffic to their blog or their site.

There are two huge problems with these types of sites that promise to help you get free traffic.

Problem 1: Trading time for clicks

Trading time for clicks is not an effective strategy on how to get free traffic.

Problem 2: Targeted vs. untargeted traffic

Many newbies will signup and join sites such as:

InstantBuzz

TrumpTraffic

TrafficSwarm

Hits2u.com

etc, etc…

However, I am not even linking to these sites because I do not endorse them and I would not recommend them to you. The problem with these sites is that while they might get you some or even a lot of free traffic, it will most likely be NOT targeted and so while you can get free traffic here it will convert poorly.

Insight Number 2 on How to Get Free Traffic:

Spend $20 to $200 on books about the topic I am interested in, and I would get a few background books on marketing and the web including Purple Cow, The Cluetrain Manifesto, and Don’t Make Me Think. ~Aron Wall

Learn from the best SEO experts in town. Read every leading SEO blog and invest money into buying SEO guides and books. You need to know how to optimize your content because only optimized content will do great in the search engines.

Insight Number 3 on How to Get Free Traffic:

Start blogging, pay for content writing, and leverage social media

Another common theme that surfaced was the importance of writing blog posts and surprisingly the importance of hiring people to write content for you. This one came as a surprise to me but I think this is something that the leading Internet Marketing experts have been doing for a long time. Writing good original content takes time and there are lots of great writers out there that are offering writing services at a good price at eLance.

To find out what content they should write and how to best leverage social media sites continue by reading the Interview of the top 7 Internet Marketing Experts…

And this doesn’t limit itself to Miss Hilton’s social antics, there’s a million things out there that a lot of people are interested in. That’s why word-of-mouth is such a powerful tool. Internet history is filled with stories of great products that conquered the world solely on word-of-mouth. Think Hotmail – the free email service that spread like wildfire and was eventually acquired by Microsoft for $300 million. Or Google…the dominant search engine that grew into a company with a market value of $100 billion without ever having to buy an ad on TV. These ideas spread through a process called viral marketing. You use a service you like – discover to your delight that it’s free and tell your friends about it. Your friends tell their friends and soon the idea or product gains publicity like wildfire as its user base spreads like a virus. You don’t even have to come up with a brilliant idea to take advantage of viral marketing. It’s amazing how simple concepts can conquer the net. Take a look at the example of GoGratitude.com. End 2005, Stacy Robyn launched a site called gogratitude.com. The idea behind the site was that by expressing gratitude, people would enhance their spiritual lives. Stacey quickly designed a very basic site build upon her idea of gratitude. She included an amateuristic flash video, ‘the gratitude master key’. You can view the Flash video here http://www.gogratitude.com/masterkey/ Despite being really basic and amateurish, the video resonated with people. In fact, maybe it resonated so well precisely because it was basic, amatuerish, honest and so non-corporate. After viewing the video the visitor would see a simple page congratulating them for taking in the mssage of the video and asking them to forward it to their friends. Here’s a screenshot of that page Stacy urges people to expres their gratitude by forwarding the video to their friends. This was the forward email she used: Hi (First Name), Wow! Have you seen this yet?Imagine being given a key that opens all doors of possibility… one that is everywhere around you – just waiting for you to wake up, take notice and appreciate what is already here.I’ve just received my copy, and thought of you…Are you prepared to receive yours, too?www.gogratitude.com/master keyGratefully, (Your name) She also asked visitors to subscribe to her free 42-day experiment, a type of newsletter from which each email urges people to share the concept of gratitude.

Stacy urges people to expres their gratitude by forwarding the video to their friends. This was the forward email she used:

Hi (First Name),

Wow! Have you seen this yet?Imagine being given a key that opens all doors of possibility… one that is everywhere around you – just waiting for you to wake up, take notice and appreciate what is already here.I’ve just received my copy, and thought of you…Are you prepared to receive yours, too?www.gogratitude.com/master keyGratefully,

She also asked visitors to subscribe to her free 42-day experiment, a type of newsletter from which each email urges people to share the concept of gratitude.

Somehow Stacy’s honest and open idea resonated with people. Results of her experiment were amazing. After only 3 months 433,000 people had viewed her flash video and over a third of those had subscribed to her free newsletter.

This is pretty darn impressive. I know that other websites in her field of self-improvement typically pay up to $1 per subscriber and it takes years to get a mailing list of 100,000+ names. Stacy accomplished this in 4 months for absolutely nothing.

So if you’re looking to increase traffic, it might not be a bad idea to look into viral marketing.

Why did Stacy’s viral marketing idea work?

A Formula For Viral Marketing

Seth Godin, one of the Internet’s top marketers, developed a simple formula for viral marketing. Here’s Seth’s formula, in his own words:

“For an idea to spread, it needs to be sent and received.”

According to Seth

No one ‘sends’ an idea unless:

They understand it

They want it to spread

They believe that spreading it will enhance their power (reputation, income, friendships) or their peace of mind

The effort necessary to send the idea is less than the benefits

No one ‘gets’ an idea unless:

The first impression demands further investigation

They already understand the foundation ideas necessary to get the new idea

They trust or respect the sender enough to invest the time

This explains why online ideas spread so fast but why they’re often shallow. Nietzsche is hard to understand and risky to spread, so it moves slowly among people willing to invest the time. Numa Numa, (a video of a teenage kid doing a funny song and dance routine that was downloaded over 1 million times in 2005) on the other hand, spread like a toxic waste spill because it was so transparent, reasonably funny and easy to share.

Simple and elegant isn’t it?

Stacey’s GoGratitude.com presentation spread because she made it easy to understand. It was a simple idea zen-like idea – be thankful for what you have and you’ll be happier!

Second, she was successful in motivating people to spread this message. The principal of gratitude is a folksy, spiritual idea that resonated with many people. It also made people feel good sharing it.

And finally – with the forward form she developed, she made it easy to spread (to quote Seth, the effort necessary to send the idea is less than the benefits).

Seth’s formula can be applied to many ideas and products. How can it be applied to your site?

The easiest way to use viral marketing is through a simple forward form. If you have something worth forwarding like a free course or newsletter just include a forward form on your site and in the messages to your subscribers. A forward form could be as plain as this:

Implementing A Forward Form On Your Website

Here’s the code you’ll need. If you are not familiar with basic PHP, you can simply pass this code on to your web designer for implementation.

You can see a simple working copy here.

The code consists of just 3 files.

First, you’ll need a sign-up form. Here’s a sample form you can copy and modify. This form will forward the recipient’s email addresses to a PHP script that will process the addresses and send out the emails. The form also checks for common email errors such as forgetting the ‘@’ symbol.

The second part is the actual code that sends out the email. This is in a file called forward.php.

The last file is called forwardmail.htm in the same folder. This is the actual email that gets forwarded on.

These 3 files, when used together, will allow you to have your web designer quickly implement a forwarding form on your site. You have full permission to further modify these files to suit your site.

To get started you can download the 3 files above as a zipped file.

This might be an hour of work with a huge payoff. For our sites, forward forms like these have boosted sign-ups with up to 13%.

Ok, so I guess the forward rate of a controversial story about La Hilton would make this 13% look rather insignificant. Well, I challenge you, if you have any creative ideas, use them! I’m confident you can do a lot better than us.
